Redfern’s newest community shopping precinct, Redfern Village, has expanded with new retailers joining its vibrant range of eateries, cafes, medical specialists and other businesses.
Located adjacent to Redfern Station on the corner of Redfern and Gibbons St, the precinct is now home to a wide variety of stores including Social-Laneway Espresso.Wine.Dine; Yatai Sushi; Jad’s Hair; Blue Flame Express; The House of Thai; Great Feets Podiatry; Coffee Drop Café; and L’Avenue Sandwich Bar and Café.
Redfern Village Spokesperson, Jordan Cameron, says the precinct is fully open for business, with a grand opening due to take place in the coming weeks.
“Offering a wide range of stores and amenities on the doorstep of Redfern Station, Redfern Village is the place for locals to shop, eat and stay healthy,” says Jordan. “I’d like to invite locals to come down to explore Redfern Village for themselves.”
Robert Ian Bonnick, who runs local favourite café, Social-Laneway, with partner, Marina Agustina and their eight-month-old daughter, Alexa-Rose, says that as one of the first commercial tenants at Redfern Village, the precinct has transformed before their eyes.
“Formerly this place used to be a thoroughfare, with people just passing through. Now it’s a central hub for locals of all walks of life,” says Robert.
Robert explains that both Social-Laneway and Redfern Village were designed around creating a friendly and communal atmosphere, so that people can come in, interact, talk, get to know new people.
“We wanted Social-Laneway to be a place where people can chill out, have a great coffee or a meal and slow down from the speed of everyday life. With the launch of Redfern Village the whole precinct has been reinvigorated and we’re very excited about the opportunities.”
Jad Suro, Owner at Jad’s Hair, spent 13 years abroad styling hair and makeup for films, theatre and fashion shows in Los Angeles and New York before returning to Australia in 2008. After having her first child, Maddox, in 2014, Jad decided to pursue her dream of starting her own business and purchased a salon in Redfern Village located directly below her apartment.
“Redfern is an up and coming area that’s so central to everything. The city is just down the road and the train station is on our doorstep, plus living in the same building as my salon is amazing as I’m always so close to my son. Many of my friends and customers live in the area as well and everyone in the village knows each other. It gives the place a great vibe,” says Jad.
